Touchstones

Birdlings Flat Beach, about 35 minutes from Christchurch on the way to Akaroa, is a place many locals love. It’s wild, untamed, weather-beaten and filled with the most amazing flat greywacke stones that I (for one) love to collect. The beach is famous for its fishing, its dangerous currents, its quirky seaside cottages and its sea-tumbled agates, amethysts and other semi-precious stones. But it was the simple greywacke pebbles that inspired the team at Continuum to create NZ Rox, a series of fabulous wearable Touchstones ‘carved’ with classic New Zealand Maori-inspired designs. They’ve been a roaring success and they’re universally appealing. Even better, the purchase of every NZ Rox item helps fund the protection of Te Roto 0 Wairewa (lake Forsyth) in partnership with the Wairewa Runanga, who are the kaitiaki (guardians) of the lake – one of only two customary lakes in New Zealand. www.NZrox.com
